9 Things to Check When There is No Sound in the Lessons

The sound for interactive lessons on your or a student's device does not seem to be working. How to troubleshoot why.

In this article, you will learn 8 ways to troubleshoot sound issues for the interactive lessons on your device.

Sound in the Lesson 

The first thing you can check is, and I know it sounds obvious, but make sure that the slide they are viewing actually has sound or is supposed to have sound on it. 

Headphones Vs. Speakers 

  1. Check that your speakers or headphones are working. The easiest way to check is to open YouTube and play a video. 

  2. If the previous step resulted in no sound, try it without headphones or if you are using the built-in speakers, try it with headphones. 

  3. If it works in one but not the other... continue to the Settings section. Your audio could be set to only output to one or the other rather than automatically changing.

  1. In the lower right corner of your screen, you will see a series of icons. 

  2. Click on the speaker icon. A pop-up will appear showing you information about your audio. 

  3. Make sure that the audio is at a high volume. 

  4. If it's muted, unmute it. 

  5. Ensure that the output is set to the proper destination. 

Browser Cache 

Try clearing your browser cache. Your browser cache may not contain the most recent version of the lesson and is trying to play the incorrect version. 

Close the Lid on your Laptop or Chromebook 

The "close lid" solution (for laptops and Chromebooks) 

  1. Unplug your headphones.

  2. Close the lid of the device and wait ten seconds.

  3. Plugin the headphones.

  4. Open the lid. The device will re-scan for audio devices and should find your headphones.

Restart your Device 

The restart solution can work on any device (laptop, desktop, mobile). 

  1. Turn off your device.

  2. Plug in the headphones.

  3. Turn on the device. The device will re-scan for audio devices on startup and should find your headphones or speakers. 

Try a Different User Profile 

  1. Turn off your device and then turn it back on.

  2.  At the login screen, select Browse as Guest (or similarly worded option depending on the device). 

  3. This will allow you to run the device without any unique settings that might have been added after the fact. 

  4. Try to play sound in a lesson now. 

  5. If it works, there is some broken setting or component in your regular login. 

  6. To fix this permanently, you'll need to reset your device. (I recommend reaching out to your IT department if this is the case.)

Charge your Chromebook 

Sometimes on Chromebooks when the battery is low, the sound will start to go in and out or even stop altogether. 

If the battery is low, try charging it to see if the sound comes back. 

iPad Sound Issues

If you are using an iPad to view lessons and experience sound issues on a page or a lesson, it is likely a setting on the iPad itself. To resolve sound issues on an iPad:

  1. From the Home or Lock screen, swipe downward from the upper-right corner to access the Control Center.

  2. If the bell in the lower left-hand corner of the Control Center has a red line through it, tap on the bell to unmute.
