In this article, you’ll learn how to determine which version of Microsoft Office you have and whether AES has curriculum to match!

How to determine your version of Office:

  1. Start a Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  2. Click the File tab in the ribbon.
  3. Then, click Account
  4. On the right, you will see the version of Office

What is the difference between these version of Office and will they be covered by AES?

Office 2013

This is a "non-subscription" version of the installed software. Microsoft released the software in 2013 and have not released updates since.

You can find curriculum for Office 2013 in AES, but these modules are in “Maintenance Mode,” meaning no new content will be created for them. The only changes will be to correct errors.

Office 2016

This is a "non-subscription" version of the installed software. Microsoft released the software in 2016 and will not release updates.

You can find curriculum for this version within the “Microsoft Office 2016” curriculum template of AES.

Office 2019

This is a “non-subscription" version of the installed software that was recently released.

You can find curriculum for this version within the “Microsoft Office 2019” curriculum template of AES.

Office 365

This is a subscription version for the installed software. Microsoft releases regular updates to this version, which means it can change at any time.

This is the version that we use here at AES and the version we see most schools switching to.

You can find curriculum for this version within the “Microsoft Office 365” template of AES.

Office Online

This is the online web browser version of Microsoft Applications, formerly called "Office 365". Today we don't have plans to develop curriculum for Office Online. The interface is different, and there are some missing features.

This version is not included in AES content. Currently, we don’t have plans to develop curriculum for this version.

Office Mobile Applications

This is a mobile app downloaded onto your mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.)

This version is not included in AES content.

Office for Macs

There are Mac versions available for 2016, 2019 and 365.

The Mac versions are pretty close to the PC screens.

There are a few differences between them, which may result in some students struggling to make the connections between the PC-based instruction in the lessons and their Mac application versions. These versions are not included in AES content.
